Education Center

Everyone needs and deserves a good education. For students who have dropped out of school, been expelled, or have just fallen behind, the Southwest Education Center (SWEC) can help. Our teachers understand the things that can get in the way of learning and help students overcome them.

Teachers at the Education Center set high academic standards and provide the environment and instruction needed to meet them. We stress individual responsibility and prepare students to be successful in future educational or employment settings.

Program Information

The high school re-entry program is an alternative high-school experience designed to help students reconnect with their education. This program is for high-school students ages 15-19 who have dropped out, been suspended, or who are seriously behind in their credits. The goal is to help students successfully transition back into comprehensive high schools so they can graduate with their peers.

Our small classes focus on language arts, math, social studies and personal development. Other classes may be offered to satisfy high-school requirements.

Students are welcome to apply at any time. Although not every student who applies will be eligible, we review all applications. We place selected students on a waiting list and notify them when the next opening is available.

The Teen Parent GED program helps teen parents or expecting teen parents acquire the academic skills necessary to achieve their GED. Certified teachers guide students in language arts, writing, math, social studies and science.

We collaborate with the teen-parent advocacy program, which provides intensive support and advocacy for teen parents, along with information about parenting and child development. Together, both programs help teen-parents become successful in their education and in their lives.

The Writers’ Workshop is an 8-week intensive writing program where students find their voice in writing. Students write poems and stories for The Boot, a literary journal for, by and about youth. At the end of the program, students have the opportunity to read their work in front of a live audience.

Students earn high-school credit for their work and may also be placed in the City of Seattle Youth Employment Program. Applications for the workshop are usually accepted in April and can be mailed, e-mailed or dropped off at
